when white defends the d4 pawn with c3, then better to not exchange on d4, because that gives white a big center, better to play Nbd7, Nf6,Be7,0-0 and later play c6, plan b7-b5 advance, if white plays a2-a4, then b7-b6, then a7-a6 to support b6-b5.
